2018-19 Spring - MGCS6000F - History of International Development

Course

Description

This seminar will examine the history of international development in the 20th and 21st centuries. We will learn about the origins of international development projects in early 20th century colonial policies and in the Cold War era. We will examine how definitions of poverty, progress and prosperity have been redefined by different government and non-government authorities over the past three generations. We will look closely at how international development projects have impacted China, Indonesia and sub-Saharan Africa. Students will be assigned a variety of readings and will write a brief response paper every week. Each week students will participate in a group discussion seminar that focuses on one aspect of the history of international development. Students will spend the last four weeks of class preparing a final project (either a poster or a research paper) and participating in a peer review exercise that will help them revise their papers to ensure they are of high quality.
