Description

This course introduces to students theories about social movements and contentious politics, with reference to empirical cases that have occurred in China, Hong Kong, and other countries or areas. It will discuss various issues in social movements and protests, including the role of grievances, issue framing, political opportunities, leadership, mobilization of participants, protest tactics, response of the targeted authority, and protest outcomes.
