China has become the world's second largest economy at a time of unprecedented connectivity and its global interactions are more extensive now than at any time in the country's history. Africa is the continent with the largest number of countries, fastest growing population and greatest resources. Its relationship with China is constantly discussed. This course will consider the most talked-about topics within the China/Africa discourse, particularly those dealing with the political economy and person-to-person relationships between China and Africa and Chinese and Africans. Most lectures are presented online, outside the classroom. After an initial lecture on relevant theories of development, class time will be exclusively devoted to discussing the lecture videos, with the classroom discussions led by teams of students, and to papers written and presented by student teams.
