This course aims to provide students with foundation knowledge of smart city development and the opportunities of the use of design thinking and artificial intelligence (AI) in various smart city project initiatives. By the end of the course, students should be able to analyze, evaluate and apply design thinking and AI together with open data in addressing urban challenges and demonstrate empathy and knowledge in smart city development. Industry practitioners representing the smart city and start-up ecosystem will be invited to share their projects or case studies with the students. The assessment will be completed with a combination of online quizzes, evidence in participating in online discussions, a reflection report, and a final group project involving the proposal of applying design thinking and AI to solve a urban city problem / challenge.
