By exploring visions of the corpus in early and medieval Buddhist and Daoist literature, the class challenges the predominant and seemingly “natural” model of a dichotomy between the body and soul/psyche as developed in a Euro-Christian context that also crystallized in the modern disciplines of medicine and psychology. In other words, it emphasizes the cultural and historical situatedness of any understanding of the body throughout human history.
