Description

This course has two purposes, blending theory and practice. The first is to extend the understanding of open economy macroeconomic theory and international finance from simple reduced form models to micro-founded models with greater sophistication. The second purpose is to explain the relationship between macro variables and asset markets, - equity, fixed income, and foreign exchange, commodities etc. Topics may include current account sustainability and China-US bilateral trade imbalances, models of exchange rate determination, interest rate parity, carry trades, forward premium puzzle, balance of payment crises, hyperinflation, and international business cycles. After an introduction to equity and bond market valuation, applications are global, but a particular focus will be on Asia-Pacific equity markets. The use of data, via the use of factor analysis and the use and interpretation of economic and market related indicators, is presented. There will be an introduction to implementation of macro investment strategies via exchange traded funds (ETF), futures and options markets. Real world examples, together with finance industry samples of macro and investment strategy research are utilized throughout.
