This course offers a comprehensive overview of the venture capital investing cycle, covering topics from forming and raising a VC fund to VC portfolio construction, and portfolio management. It also delves into venture capital reward systems, fund returns, and explores the skills required to secure a job in this intriguing sector of high finance. The knowledge, skills, and insights gained from this class are applicable to those managing family offices or corporate investment assets, launching and managing their own VC fund, or working as investment bankers assisting entrepreneurs and VCs. Unlike other VC/PE courses offered at HKUST, this course follows the complete life cycle of a VC fund, from its inception to its conclusion. Tracking the entire life cycle is the best way to understand the internal dynamics of the VC industry in order not to miss the forest for the trees. Real-world examples, including personal experiences of the instructor in renowned VC firms like Khosla Ventures, Softbank, and Formation 8, are incorporated throughout the course.
