2025-26 Fall - MESF5970 - Smart Materials, Sensors and Transducers

Course

Description

Materials have been shaping human history since the dawn of civilization, as the naming of eras after materials - the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, the Iron Age - reminds us. Smart materials are a novel class of materials characterized by new and unique properties that can be altered in response to environmental stimuli. They can be used in a wide range of applications since they can exceed the current abilities of traditional materials, especially in environments where conditions are constantly changing. This course is designed to provide an integrated and complete knowledge of smart materials and meta-structures. The course will also introduce the state-of-the-art advances in applications of smart materials in sensors, actuators, energy harvesters, acoustic transducers, and microelectronic and mechanical systems. The course will lay a strong foundation for students' future research and career in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and material science.
