It builds foundational skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, while introducing essential vocabulary, grammar, and cultural concepts for basic communication. Over 13 weeks, students will learn to introduce themselves, ask and answer simple questions, describe daily routines, and participate in short conversations. The course also explores key aspects of Japanese culture, including greetings, social customs, and the appropriate use of language in formal and informal settings. Alternatively, students may opt for a flexible 8-week learning pathway that combines face-to-face sessions with online self-learning by taking LANG1211 Communicative Japanese for Beginners I (2 credits), which focuses on practical communication skills, and LANG1212 Japanese Vocabulary and Grammar Essentials I (1 credit), an online module that allows students to study vocabulary and grammar at their own pace.
