Instructor(s)/Supervisor(s)/Coordinator(s): Donald LOWThis course takes students to one of the global cities in Asia - Tokyo or Singapore - to study their economic development and their contemporary economic and policy challenges. The study visit to Japan would examine Japan’s lost decades and its balance sheet recession between the late 1990s and early 2010s. It will help students appreciate how the country survived nearly two decades of economic stagnation and examine lessons for contemporary China, which is grappling with similar problems of debt deleveraging, deflation, decline of asset values, and aging demographics. The study visit to Singapore would offer participants a broad introduction to Singapore’s long-term approach in urban planning and infrastructure development, public housing, economic development, water security, and financial sector development.
