Professor Che Ting CHAN, PhD
Professor Che Ting CHAN was appointed the Interim Director of HKUST Jockey Club Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) with effect from 1 December 2024.
Prof. Chan is Daniel C K Yu Professor of Science and Chair Professor in the Department of Physics. He specializes in the theory and simulation of advanced materials. He earned his PhD in Physics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1985 and previously served as a physicist at the Ames Laboratory, US Department of Energy, before joining HKUST. His accolades include the Croucher Senior Research Fellowship, the Achievement in Asia Award from the Overseas Chinese Physics Association, and co-recipient of the Brillouin Medal for his research in metamaterials. Additionally, Professor Chan is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, an Inaugural Fellow of the Physical Society of Hong Kong, and a member of the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences.
Since joining HKUST, Professor Chan has held various administrative roles. He is concurrently the Director of the Research Office and has previously served as Associate Vice-President for Research and Development (Research) (“AVP-RD (R)”) and Executive Director of IAS.
In his role as Interim Director of IAS, Professor Chan will provide overall direction for the Institute, including planning and overseeing academic programs, fostering a vibrant IAS community, and promoting collaboration with HKUST schools, departments, and divisions. He will cultivate partnerships with local, national, and international researchers and educational institutions, nurturing a dynamic research environment within HKUST and continuing our culture of research excellence.
