Characteristic Mode Analysis of ESPAR Antennas for Energy Efficient MIMO Systems

Research output: Contribution to conferenceConference Paperpeer-review

Abstract

A systematic method based on the theory of characteristic modes (TCM) for finding orthogonal radiation patterns of any electronically steerable parasitic antenna radiator (ESPAR) is described. This method can be useful for designing single-radio-frequency (RF) front-end MIMO systems in which orthogonal patterns can be utilized as a basis set for beamspace MIMO systems. The method is general and is not restricted to antenna number, type and array configuration. Techniques for efficiently finding the parasitic loads for the orthogonal patterns is also provided. Simulation examples of ESPAR configured as rectangular planar inverted-F antenna array in full multiplexed MIMO systems is provided, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed method in improving energy efficiency of ESPAR-based MIMO systems.
