Abstract
Failures of initially loose unsaturated man- made (or fill) slopes due to rainfall infiltration are not uncommon in many parts of the world. Some of these failures are reported as caused by static liquefaction. However, the behaviour and the transformation from initially loose unsaturated to saturated states of soils, well - graded decomposed material in particular, are not fully understood and correctly modelled.
