Abstract

This study applies logistic regression to analyze the pedestrian-vehicle crashes that were reported by the Transport Department and the police during 1991-2004, and to explore the influence of the demographic characteristics of the pedestrians involved, causes of accident, time of crash, accident location, presence of traffic control, road geometry, and environment on accidents that involve pedestrian casualties. We also control for the temporal effect by introducing time variates that account for the effect of changes in road infrastructure, traffic environment, and flow pattern over the concerned period. Both disaggregated and aggregated analyses are performed, and the accident characteristics, time of crash, accident location, traffic condition, and road geometry are found to be significant contributory factors to death and serious injury in a pedestrian-vehicle crash.
