Abstract

The a. c. instabilities were investigated for homogeneously oriented layers of nematic liquid crystals (NLC) with negative dielectric anisotropy ( epsilon //a less than 0) and for homeotropically oriented NLC layers with epsilon //a greater than 0. It is shown that electro-convective ″isotropic″ flows of a liquid near the electrodes play a crucial role in the formation of optical domain structures. A mechanism is discussed for the threshold destabilization of an initial director field in thin oriented NLC layers.
