Abstract
Early sociological research suggested that economic actions and social relationships are deeply intertwined. Drawing on this research, Granovetter (American Journal of Sociology 91:481–510, 1985) advanced the concept of embeddedness, which stressed that economic action takes place within networks of social relationships. This influential work motivated research in economic sociology, organizational theory and strategy that aimed to identify how various patterns and dynamics of social structure affect economic action and outcomes.
