Abstract
In the course of writing this book I have incurred numerous personal and intellectual debts to many teachers and friends. My greatest debt is to Leo Ou-fan Lee who first introduced me to the study of modern Chinese history when I was an undergraduate at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. For more than a decade, Dr. Lee has been my teacher, advisor, critic, and friend, offering me illuminating guidance and unfailing support. Along with scores of other students of Chinese intellectual history, lowe a special debt to Benjamin I. Schwartz, my thesis advisor, for his intellectual inspiration, patient guidance, and incisive comments on the original manuscript, and for his continuing interest in this project. Patrick Hanan, my other advisor, has given me expert advice and unstinting help.
