Abstract

The fundamental equations of the continuum theory of nematic and cholesteric liquid crystals are obtained by considering the form of free energy associated with a spatially varying orientational director field. The twistid nematic cell, the magnetic (electric) coherence length, the V. Freedericksz transition, and the unwinding of the cholesteric helix in a static magnetic (electric) field are discussed in terms of the continuum theory.
