Abstract
The flow Held about an airfoil at a chord Reynolds number of 79,000 was investigated. A piezoactuated flap on the upper surface was used to perturb the laminar separation. The trailing edge of the flap formed a backward-facing step, which fixed the separation location. Periodic actuation at 200 Hz was found to induce a convecting vortex structure in the separated shear layer. The vortex location was correlated to the flap position. Time correlated particle image velocimetry results provided information on the convection and growth of the vortex and its impact on the flow reattachment. Laser vibrometer measurements of the flap position were performed to give accurate boundary conditions for future CFD and flow control studies.
