Magnetic properties of CoCl2-intercalated graphite

Abstract

The temperature and magnetic field dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity of graphite-CoCl2 are investigated to understand the role of dimensionality in the observed magnetic phase transitions. The structure of graphite-CoCl2 shows similarities between the magnetic layers of Co2+ in pristine and in the intercalated CoCl2 compound. However, microstructural analysis shows the presence of small islands of magnetic ions. The theoretical model for the 2-dimensional planar magnets is extended to include small magnetic domains. The finite size effect analysis shows good agreement between the experimental and theoretical results. The presence of external magnetic fields demonstrates the static scaling hypothesis for the magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity.
