Abstract
The importance of formal as well as informal networking has been widely recognized in the theoretical literature on innovation. Network linkages play a crucial role in knowledge flows, but they can be equally vital to the growth of new technology ventures by enhancing interaction with potential customers and financiers. The promotion of such networks is seen as a key objective in the establishment of new infrastructure for innovation, such as the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park (HKSTP). In this paper, we analyze the value of networking for new technology firms located in HKSTP, drawing on the quantitative and qualitative data collected from a series of interviews conducted in 2011-2013. The findings show that respondents in the firms recognized the increased opportunities offered by the HKSTP for exchange and transfer of knowledge, both formal exchanges at seminars and conferences, and more informal linkages at dinner gatherings and ceremonies. Some firms also indicated that networks with university researchers in Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland had been established since moving to the science park.
