Abstract
Sustainable biochar-based catalysts have attracted extensive attention due to their adjustable porosity, high specific surface area, and stable chemical structure. In this chapter, recent developments in peroxide-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) using biochar-based catalysts for wastewater treatment are summarized. Heteroatom doping and metal loading are the most commonly used approaches to enhance catalytic efficiency. The unique structures and beneficial properties of these biochar-based catalysts for peroxide activation are presented. Among peroxide-based AOPs, Fenton-like system, persulfate activation system, and photocatalytic system have been rigorously discussed in terms of degradation performance, generation of reactive oxidizing species, and reaction mechanism. Finally, with a deep understanding of the applicability and limitations of peroxide-based AOPs and a full understanding of the complexity of biochar-based catalysts, the development direction of peroxide-based biochar-assisted AOPs is further prospected.
