N2 - The article reviews the latest developments in the field of self-sensing, self-healing and green cement-based materials termed as 'Smart Concrete'. It makes the point that while enormous progress is being made in the development of smart cities, smart homes, and smart gadgets, concrete remains unchanged although it forms the backbone of most modern infrastructure. Although the cost of smart concrete could be in multiples of ordinary concrete, it impacts on overall project cost is much smaller given that material cost is only a small fraction of the total project cost in most developed economies. Only investment in the latest and most advanced cement-based materials can ensure sustainable growth and development for the future.
