Abstract

Dr. Rajaram was engaged in international wheat breeding for more than 50 years. Based on Dr. Borlaug’s international wheat breeding achievements, Dr. Rajaram made further major contributions in four aspects by leading CIMMYT.(1) Launched a large scale of spring×winter wheat crossing, and breakthrough was achieved in enhancing yield potential with a wide range of adaptability and resistance to major diseases;(2) Employed slow-rusting concept in wheat breeding program and varieties with durable resistance were later developed and used by farmers worldwide;(3) Developed breeding tools and screening methods for tolerance to acid soil and drought stress;(4) Released 481 varieties in 51 countries during 1976-2001,with annual sowing acreage of 60 million ha in developing countries. He also made outstanding contributions in training scientists both in less developed countries as well as those in international organizations such as CIMMYT and ICARDA.
