Abstract
This paper paints a macroscopic picture of the evolution of intercity transportation. Over a period of 200 years, passenger transportation in the US has shown a progressive transition from waterways to railways to roads to airways, with dominant modal changes every 50-60 years. Following this historical trend, a new mode should be introduced to enhance mobility into the 21st century. It is argued that this new mode is high speed ground transportation (HSGT). It is noted that Europe, while having a distinct modal split, underwent the same transport transitions as the US and that China is likely to follow suite, albeit in a compressed time frame. Long term planning should be undertaken to identify and reserve adequate rights-of-way for the transportation infrastructure that will be needed.
