Abstract
Geometric representations are not the exclusive 3-D representation from which images are rendered. Giving geometric properties to an image enables special video effects, such as warping. Scientific and medical visualization applications routinely render dense volumetric data without resorting to intermediate surface description. Direct volume rendering of this sort is a hybrid of the reconstruction and re-sampling stages of signal processing, and the 3-D transformations and visibility calculations of computer graphics.
