Abstract

This paper demonstrates a smart high-power LED lightbulb equipped with visible light communication (VLC) functionality for a target smart-home system (SHS). We present both a theoretical model and a hardware prototype to verify its ability to control domestic devices. The lightbulb consumes 10.3 W electric power and reaches a communication distance of 3 m. It serves as a beacon in the SHS, furnishing location data and information about the information appliances (IAs) that can be controlled in a particular room. Managing the IAs in the SHS is performed through Bluetooth via a preinstalled smartphone app.
