Abstract

The transient flow field associated with the firing of a large caliber conventional gun is studied to better understand the physical models needed to perform accurate simulations. A computational design code developed for such flow problems is reviewed with emphasis on both numerical and physical aspects. Simulations are carried out using different physical models of both the fluid dynamics and chemical reaction processes present in the problem, and the results are presented and compared to both simulations by previous investigators and experimental measurements. It is evident that both turbulence and chemical reactions between the gun effluent and the ambient air have a distinct impact on the pressure time histories. © 1996, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.
