Abstract

The image force exerted on a screw dislocation near a planar or cylindrical free surface or an elliptical hole is usually smaller than that computed without including the core traction (or effectively regarding the core size as zero). For a screw dislocation emitted from a crack tip, the screw dislocation can be repelled by its images. This questions the critical force criterion for the emission of a dislocation from a crack tip. A criterion using zero activation energy is suggested and compared with the critical force criterion.
