Abstract

During the Second Sino-Japanese War, with the support of Japanese military, Wang Jingwei established the Nationalist Government in Nanjing on 30th March, 1940. Opposing to the Chiang Kai-shek Nationalist Government in Chongqing, Wang aims to focus on the policy: “peace, anti-communism and rebuilding the nation”, and to promote friendship between China and Japan. While doing so, he hopes to gain the recognition of the legitimacy of his government, and the support from the people. Women’s support becomes critical in this aspect. This thesis looks at Guangzhou under the regime of Wang Jingwei as an example, and looks at how it implements women’s work with the intention to gain the support of women. The discussion focuses on three major aspects: women organizations in Guangzhou, women magazines and women teachers’ training education. Women organizations dedicated themselves to women who were in need by providing welfare. Women magazines and women teachers’ training education, on the other hand, aimed at women who were educated. Wang’s government hoped to gain the support from educated women who in turn would help promote and consolidate Wang’s regime.
