From the mid-nineteenth to mid-twentieth century, Shanghai was a big industrial and commercial city, a magnet for merchants from around the country and for peasants seeking work. Shanghai was also a leading place in the development of different cultural product. Cartoons was one of a new popular media and represented the new taste of this period. In this thesis, I try to examine his works in this period from a historical perspective.
