Student thesis: Master's thesis

Abstract

This thesis presents an in-depth study of high-performance, ultra-thin polarizers based on photo-aligned azo dyes and their applications in display technologies. We have successfully developed polarizers with a remarkable Dichroic Ratio and a Polarization Efficiency, all while maintaining a film thickness of just 100-300 nm. We explored three distinct types of thin-film polarizers: the coatable AD1 polarizer and AD4455 polarizer, the evaporated and in-situ photo-aligned AD12 polarizer with improved photo-stability, and the broadband photo-stable protonated AD1H polarizer, each exhibiting unique strengths and versatility in various display technologies. This thesis provides detailed analyses of these azo dye polarizers, focusing on their absorptive properties, the photo-induced molecular rotation mechanism, and fabrication advancements. The thesis also highlights the creation of patterned polarizers and the development of flexible polarizers, extending their practical uses.

Additionally, the thesis reveals the design of composite azo-dye thin-film polarizers, focusing on enhancing durability and stability. It proposes adding functional protective layers to improve the polarizer's durability. The study then discusses an advanced composite thin-film polarizer configuration, engineered for an enhanced dichroic ratio and superior photo-stability, further elevating the performance of these innovative polarizers in display technologies.

A significant achievement of this work is the successful integration of these ultra-thin polarizers in traditional liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and PLCF-color conversion displays, featuring in-cell polarizers. This includes the development of both low-resolution and high-resolution LCDs, using patterned quantum rod films and organic color conversion films, demonstrating the practical application and effectiveness of these innovative in-cell polarizers in modern display technologies.
