Abstract
This thesis focuses on the synthesis, biological evaluation, and cytotoxicity analysis of analogues of two decalin-containing natural products, equisetin and anthracimycin, and their scaffolds. The analogues were evaluated for their antibacterial activity against various bacterial strains, and their potential as novel antibiotics was discussed. The thesis provides insights into the chemical and biological properties of decalin-containing natural products and their analogues, and offers future directions for research in this area.Chapter one focuses on the synthesis, biological evaluation, and cytotoxicity analysis of analogues of two decalin-containing natural products, equisetin and anthracimycin. The introductory sections provide an overview of microorganisms and antibiotics. The subsequent sections describe the syntheses of equisetin and anthracimycin scaffolds, as well as the synthesis of their analogues. The biological studies focus on the evaluation of these analogues against various bacterial strains and the analysis of their cytotoxicity. The results of these studies are presented and discussed, highlighting the antibacterial activity and potential for further development of these compounds as novel antibiotics. The thesis concludes with future directions for research in this area.
Overall, this thesis contributes to the understanding of the chemical and biological properties of decalin-containing natural products and their analogues, and provides insights for the development of new antibacterial agents.
Chapter two provides a detailed account of the experimental procedures used for the chemical synthesis of analogues and the characterization of compounds. All compounds were purified using column chromatography or preparative TLC, and their purity was confirmed using NMR spectroscopy and HPLC prior to the bioassay. The chapter also includes a description of the bioassay and cytotoxicity experiments. The original copies of 1H and 13C NMR spectra are provided in the Appendix section of this thesis for reference.
