Abstract

Copolymers of methyl methacrylate and N-(4-nitrophenyl)-(L)-prolinyl methacrylate, P(MMA-r-NPP-MMA) and copolymers of styrene and N-(4- nitrophenyl)-(L)-prolinyl methacrylate, P(S-r-NPP-MMA) are synthesized by free radical polymerization. The hightest NPP-MMA content in the PMMA copolymer and PS copolymer are about 7%. The copolymers are characterized by gel-permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis and second harmonic generation (SHG) measurement. The miscibility behavior of P(MMA-r- NPP-MMA) copolymer / poly(vinylidene fluoride) blend and P(S-r-NPP-MMA) copolymer / poly(2,6-dimethyl-l 4-Pphenylene oxide) blend are studied. Interaction parameters in this two blend systems are also calculated. In addition, the SHG coefficient of the PMMA copolymer are determined. It is found that the SHG coefficient increases linearly with the NPP-MMA content in the PMMA copolymers. The PMMA copolymer shows a low SH signal relaxation of about 20% at 250 hours, with the majority decay of SH signal in the first 100 hours. It is expected that using method of polymer blend, the SH signal stability can be enhanced.
