This dissertation comprises three distinct essays related to the hukou system, population migration and social stratification in contemporary China. Although with different focuses, these essays examine different dimensions of one broad question, that is, how the personal migration experience interacts with the institutionalized arrangements associated with the hukou system in determining the socio-economic positions of individuals in the current social stratification system and in affecting the subjective attitudes of people towards social inequality in China.
